The Bowmore 19 Year Old French Oak (Amazon Exclusive): the first whisky to be exclusively sold on Amazon. A wonderful whisky with notes of light honey, summer fruits and a light smokiness. Wonderful.
The Bowmore 19 Year Old French Oak is the result of a collaboration between Bowmore and Amazon. This is the first expression that will be sold exclusively on Amazon and won't be found anywhere else. This 19 year old expression is matured entirely in red wine barriques (casks that hold 225 liters) from Chateau Legrange, a red wine from Bordeaux. This is no coincidence: Both Legrange and Bowmore are owned by Japanese drinks giants Suntory. This expression is non-chill filtered and bottled at 48.9% ABV and its color is 100% natural (i.e. no artificial coloring is added). The average price for this bottle is around $170.
Beyond Amazon bottling a new and interesting whisky, this seems to be a bit of a test for the online retailing giant as it dips more seriously into the whisky market. In addition to the Bowmore inaugural release, Amazon is the main online retailer for Johnnie Walker’s recent Game of Thrones-themed blend.
If the Internet giant does get more involved in releasing other exclusive bottlings, it will be hard to ignore Amazon as a potential major player in the whisky market. And if the company sees these forays as successes, expect plenty more whisky news in the future from Amazon - the company that started out selling books online.
On the nose: light peat, overly ripe red apples, red summer berries, honey, vanilla, oaky spiciness and toffee.
On the palate: berries, oaky tannins, honey, vanilla, caramel, toffee and light smokiness
Finish: Long with smokiness, honey, heather and berries.
Overall: A fantastic expression from Bowmore. The mix of light smokiness, berries and honey notes (that's found on the nose, palate and finish) works extremely well. A very enjoyable expression. Buy it here.
